How To Prevent Algae & Moss From Growing On Your Home's Roof
Most homeowners panic when they see algae and moss growth on their roof, mistaking it for mold or mildew. These black discoloration streaks seen on many roofs throughout the Rincon area are actually algae, which often forms in humid climates since they're the most conducive for growth. The most common form of algae or moss is called gloeocapsa magma or blue-green algae, and it protects itself from sunlight by creating a dark pigmented sheathe, which is what creates the dark streak-like appearance on your roof. Algae growth generally starts out as small spots but can develop into longer streaks going down your roof over time. The longer these growths are left in place, the more damage they can cause to your roof's shingles, which is why it's important to not only have them removed but to keep them from coming back. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can work to prevent moss and algae from growing on your roof, and in this article, our Rincon pressure washing experts will go over several of them.
Moss & Algae Prevention Tips
Trim Back Trees
Overhanging tree branches help create the perfect environment for moss to grow. The branches and leaves offer shade from the intense sun. Along with this the trees often leave debris on the roof. Decaying leaves and twigs give your moss the right nutrients and textures to start growing. Regularly trimming your trees will take away some of the moss’s environmental advantages and make it more difficult for it to survive.
Clean Out Rain Gutters
Unfortunately, even with the best tree trimming practices, leaves and debris can still get stuck on the roof and in the gutters. As the gutters become more clogged, water levels will rise after each rainstorm. This can be particularly helpful for the moss if the gutters overflow onto lower roofs or stop draining altogether, and why proper gutter cleaning is so important.
Add Anti-Moss Strips
Two elements disrupt the ideal moss’s environment. They are zinc and copper. To help eliminate moss these elements are cut into strips and nailed to the roof. This not only prevents the growth of moss on the roof but also algae. However, this option should only be used as a last case scenario. The nails can puncture the roof seal and cause damage as well.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Make sure that you install a proper ventilation system under your roof deck to help reduce heat and condensation buildup in your attic. Simply reducing the level of heat and humidity inside your attic can help deter the growth of new moss and algae.
